Malaysian Islamic Development Department director-general Datuk Othman Mustapha said 27 countries, mostly of Middle Eastern and African countries, had been invited to participate in the new category.
Malaysia will be represented Mohd Ersyad Abdullah from Kedah and Norhaafizah Mohd Shafie from Selangor, who are the champions of the men's and women's categories of the recent National Quran Memorisation Assembly, he said in a statement.
For the recital category, Malaysia will be represented by the national champion Ahmad Tarmizi Ali from Terengganu and Hanimzah Jalaluddin from Pahang, he said.
Overall, Othman said the recital category would see the participation of 38 reciters, while the memorisation category was expected to see the participation of 30 memorizers.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah is expected to grace the opening and closing of the assembly.
Othman said the top reciters in the men and women categories would each receive a gold bar, a trophy and cash prize of RM40,000, while top memorizers in the men and women categories would each receive a cash prize of RM30,000 and accompanying gifts.
He said the organizing of the 56th edition of the assembly themed 'Wasatiyyah Tonggak Kesatuan Ummah' was in line with the government's aspiration to promote moderation among Muslims in the country.
"The spirit of religious tolerance is enlivened when Muslims and non-Muslims can show mutual respect, work closely and live harmoniously together," he said.
