Malaysia's Hanimzah Jalaluddin was among four female reciters who participated Tuesday night. The others were Obada Tur Rehman from Pakistan, Mariyas Sulaiman (Cambodia) and Sara El Hili (Morocco).
The five male reciters who took part were Ahriouil Redouan from Belgium, Nor Muhammad Ali (Singapore), Mohammad Noor (Vietnam), Hamed Valizadeh Khalkhali (Iran) and Mehmet Bilir (Turkey).
Thirty-eight reciters, 23 males and 15 females, are taking part in the competition, which entered the second day last night.
Twenty-two male memorizers and eight female memorizers are taking part in the inaugural hafazan category (Quran memorization).
The male and female winners of the Quran recitation will each walk away with a gold ingot worth RM70,000 sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (Yapeim) and RM40,000 cash.
In the hafazan category, the male and female winners will each receive RM30,000 cash.
