"Thank God, I am pleased with my recitation," Hamed Valizadeh Khalkhali said Tuesday night, after reciting verses from Surah Hajj in the international Quran event.
He noted that his recitation was based on the guidelines provided by Master Ahmad Abolqassemi, who has accompanied Valizadeh Khalkhali to Kuala Lumpur as an adviser and guide.
Valizadeh Khalkhali who has high hopes of winning the top rank, said representatives of Egypt and the host country could be his main rivals in the competition.
He said the Malaysian and Egyptian reciters will go on stage to recite verses from the Quran on Friday.
Thirty-eight Quran reciters, 23 males and 15 females, are taking part in the competition, which entered the second day Tuesday night.
Twenty-two male memorizers and eight female memorizers are taking part in the inaugural hafazan category (Quran memorization), according to Bernama news agency.
The male and female winners of the Quran recitation will each walk away with a gold ingot worth RM70,000 sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (Yapeim) and RM40,000 cash.
In the hafazan category, the male and female winners will each receive RM30,000 cash.
