The second forum at the international section of the Holy Quran Exhibition featured contemporary Quranic studies and activities in Malaysia.

It was held Monday night with the participation of Mustafa bin Abdullah, a University of Malaysia professor and prominent Malaysian Quran scholar.
He presented a paper about the efforts of Muslim scholars, especially Malaysian scholars, in interpreting and translating the Quran.
Abdullah said the first such efforts in Malaysia began in the 17th century with Sheikh Abdul Malik bin Abdullah whose book turned into a source book for Malaysian students of Quranic research.
He added that with the 4-volume Quran exegeses by Sheikh Omar Saeed, these efforts got more serious in the 19th century.
According to Abdullah, Sheikh Saeed wrote his interpretation of the Quran based on the Hadith (narration) and rational method.
Turning to Quran translation, he said Malaysians are not familiar with the Arabic language and, therefore, their understanding of the Holy Book is primarily reliant on translation and interpretation of the Quran.
He said Quran translation in Malaysia began in the 19th century and developed in the following century.
The Malaysian scholar went on to say that some 170 books on Quran translation and interpretation have been published in the country since the beginning of the current century.
