A Quran recitation competition began in Sri Lanka on Saturday for the Maldivians living in the neighboring country.

In a statement, the Maldivian Educational and Cultural Centre (MECC) in Colombo said that 92 children from four age groups had taken part in the competition that had begun at 10am, Sri Lanka time. The contest will be over by Tuesday, the centre said.

MECC noted that Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon had attended the opening ceremony of the Quran competition, titled MECC Ramadan Qur'an Competition 1435. The opening ceremony was held at the centre located inside Sosun Villa, the former Maldivian High Commission premise, it said.

"This competition is sponsored by Mohamed Manik, the chairman of Nasandhura Palace Hotel," the statement read.

Special classes are being conducted at Sosun Villa to teach Quran, Islam and Dhivehi language to the Maldivians living in Sri Lanka. With a total of 10 classes, the government has arranged for secondary graders to complete the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) there.
