Speaking to IQNA, Hussein Hamdan said the contest helps to spread acquaintance with the Quran among Muslim world's university students.
"The competition is not just aimed at gathering students from around the world but the purpose of event is to bring Muslim students hearts closer together and strengthen Islamic unity and solidarity" he also underlined.
Hamdan referred to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the organizer of the contest, as a harbinger of Islamic unity and said the Quranic event is one precious step toward enhancing Muslim unity.
The Lebanese Quran expert further said more work needs to be done to spread information about the competition among Muslim youth in different countries.
He urged that the organizers use the cyberspace and social media for disseminating information about the contest.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Hamdan said the international competition should be used as a venue to make the Muslim youth aware of the danger of Takfiri extremists who pretend to be Muslims but act against the tenets of Islam.
He underlined that it should be clarified that extremist groups like the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have nothing to do with Islam.
The fifth edition of the International Holy Quran Competition for Muslims Students is scheduled to be held in Iran in January 2015 by the Iranian Academics' Quranic Activities Organization.
The Iranian cities of Isfahan, Tehran, Mashhad and Tabriz hosted the previous four editions of the international competition.
