Titled al-Mizmar al-Zahabi, the contest was organized by Egypt’s cultural center in Mauritania, al-Ywm al-Sabi daily reported.
Mauritania’s Quran TV also cooperated in holding the event whose aim was to promote learning recitation of the Quran.
Winners of the competition received cash prizes as well as a trip to Egypt to visit al-Azhar Islamic center, said Khalid Qarib, director of Egypt’s cultural center in Mauritania.
Tajweed refers to the rules governing pronunciation of the words during recitation of the Holy Quran.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa where Islam is the state religion. Almost all Mauritanians are Muslims.
