Addressing worshipers at the Tehran University Campus on Friday, April 6, Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami referred to the anniversary of severing ties with America and said Washington has openly and secretly asked for talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran but the case of negotiating with the US lies within the prerogative of the Supreme Leader.
Further in his sermon, Tehran’s interim Friday prayer leader pointed to the situation in Syria, stressing that Iran favors reforms in Syria and believes any foreign interference in the country will only lead to the deterioration of the situation.
“Today, Syria is paying for its firm resistance against the Zionist regime. What the West is seeking in Syria is taking revenge on the Islamic Awakening Tide,” he said, warning Western and Arab reactionaries that if they take military action in Syria, they themselves will be burnt in the ensuing fire.
The senior cleric also slammed Arab leaders for their inattention to violation of human rights in Bahrain. “Is Bahrain not an Arab nation? So many crimes are being committed [in Bahrain] before the eyes of the world and country has turned into a big jail but the Arab League turned a blind eye to all of these crimes [in their recent meeting].”
Elsewhere in the sermon, Ayatollah Khatami pointed to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei’s statements on the first day of the new Iranian year (March 20) and highlighted the need for unity among the country’s officials.
