Quran Contest for Children with Special Needs to Go International

Chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities Sultan bin Salman, who is also chairman of the Disabled Children’s Association (DCA), said a permanent endowment would be instituted in Makkah for the Qur’an memorization contest for children with special needs.
“The Qur’an memorization contest will be elevated to the international level and the prizes’ value will be increased effective from its 17th edition next year,” he said at the concluding ceremony for Qur’an Memorization contest for disabled children in Makkah on Monday.
The memorization contest has three branches on three levels. The first branch includes children with physical disabilities. The contest level of this branch is memorization from one juz to 10 juz (a juz is one of the parts of the Holy Qur’an which is divided into 30 parts of equal length for the purpose of recitation).
The second branch is meant for the children with serious upper limb disabilities and speech difficulties. They will contest in the memorization of up to five juz of the Holy Qur’an. The third branch of the contest is for children with mental disabilities or both mental and physical disabilities. They will contest in the memorization of 10 small surahs or the 30th juz.
The value of the prizes range between SR20,000 to SR15,000 in addition to SR300 for each contestant. Each participant will also receive a bag of gifts containing copies of the Holy Qur’an, electronic devices with the Holy Qur’an, a clock and a portable computer.
The terms and conditions for participation in the contest include that a participant should be a Saudi, citizen of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council country, or an expatriate in the Kingdom. Each contestant should carry a report from an accredited medical board certifying his or her physical or mental disability or both disabilities together. The maximum age limit for participation is 15.
The contest that concluded on Monday organized a number of programs aimed at the integration of disabled children into the social mainstream, which is one of the major goals of the contest. The programs included tours to the holy sites, the Kiswah factory, Two Holy Mosques exhibition and a number of commercial centers in Makkah.
The Makkah municipality and municipal council have also decided in a meeting with the prince that municipal projects such as parks, streets, toilets and houses would be designed with due consideration for disabled people.
