A lower court in the city of Madnayn in Tunisia sentenced a man who has desecrated the Holy Quran to four years in jail as well as paying a fine.
The sentence was announced after the second court hearing held on Wednesday, April 11, gnet website reported.
Ramzi bin Sa’ad Ibsha was tried for attacking four mosques in the city of Ben Gardane and defiling the Holy Quran.
The 25-year old man had been arrested by the police on March 17.
The Quran Memorizers Society of Tunisia and the country’s prayer leaders have described the sentence as inadequate, calling for tougher punishment.
Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Religious Affairs Ministry announced March 23 as the National Quran Day in response to desecration of Islamic sanctities.
The ministry has condemned anti-Quranic actions and said such measures run counter to the identity of the country and the beliefs of Tunisian people.
Tunisia, which was once a French colony and was later ruled by secular governments, including that of the former dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, has maintained its Islamic roots.
