Speaking to IQNA, Benjamin Ukumoush, an expert with Turkey’s Dianat (religious affairs) Department, said in the early years after the advent of Islam, Muslims would only pay attention to the practical aspects of the verses of the Quran and were not much familiar with scientific and theoretical aspects.
“In addition, they did not see a need to contemplate on the verses because if they would ask the Holy Prophet (PBUH) any questions they had. But following the demise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), followers of Islam in order to find answer to their numerous questions started to contemplate and interpret the verses of the Holy Book, hence discovering new points about the miraculous aspects of the Quran.”
Ukumoush said in the following centuries, and with the spread of Islam in the world, the enemies of the religion began to question Islam and its Holy Book. “Thus, Muslim scholars, who believed in the Divinity of the Quran, decided to examine the verses and match them with scientific discoveries and their studies had astonishing results.”
According to Dr Ukumoush, Abu Ubaida Muammar Bin Al-Muthanna (died in 209 Hijri- 824 A.D.) was the first Muslim scholar who wrote a book on the miraculous aspects of the Quran titled ‘Quran’s Miracle’.
“But the oldest work on the subject that has remained for us today, is a treatise titled ‘An Account of the Miracle of the Quran’ by Abu Suleyman Khatabi Basti (died 388 Hijri-998 A.D.). This work discusses the literary aspects of the Quran’s miracle.”
The Turkish scholar added that in the present era, and with the advancements in science, Muslim thinkers and scientists once again matched Quranic verses with new discoveries and proved that the Holy Quran is a book for all ages.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ukumoush underlined that the Quran, the miracle of Propeht Muhammad (PBUH), is superior to the miracles of other messengers of God as it is not a miracle only, but also a book of Tashri (lawmaking).
He said if the Quran were not from God, or if it were for a certain era as Islam’s opponents claim, there would not be so many scientific truths in it that are known today because of the advancements of science but were unknown to mankind 14 centuries ago.
“To prove Quran’s miraculousness it suffices to say that 1400 years have passed since it was revealed to the Holy prophet’s (PBUH) heart and no one has been able to produce even one verse like verses of the Quran.”
He further pointed to the meaning of the word I’jaz (miracle) and said a miracle is something that is against the natural course of events and beyond the usual ability of humans.
Born in 1961 in the city of Baibourt, Turkey, Benjamin Ukumoush is a PhD graduate of Ankara University in the field of theology. Since 2001, he has been serving as an expert in the Supreme Council of Religious Affairs at Dianat (religious affairs) Department.
