Writing literary interpretations of the Quran is not common today as it was in the past as they are not very helpful in answering contemporary society’s needs.
This is according to Quran researcher and interpreter Ayatollah Yaqub Jafari speaking to IQNA about the Quran interpretation approaches in the past 50 years.
He said half a century ago, interpretation approaches were not much different from those seen before that time. “But with coming of intellectual and Western thoughts, and emergence of new questions and doubts about various issues, as well as elevation of knowledge among ordinary people, Quran interpretation approaches and writing styles were reconsidered in order to meet the needs of the day.”
Author of “Kawsar Quran Exegesis” referred to immoderations, Tafsir Bil-Ray (interpretation based on one’s own opinion) and disregard for the criteria as some of the major flaws in contemporary Quran interpretations.
He said one of the approaches in Quran interpretation is scientific approach which highlights scientific issues to prove the Divinity of the Quran.
Ayatollah Jafari said in this approach, too, there are some excesses and immoderations.
He also noted that after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, interpreters paid more attention to social and political issues in their interpretations in order to answer questions in society about such issues.
