International affairs deputy of the Hozeh (seminary) said a Quran and Orientalists major is planned to be set up in the seminary.
This is according to Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Hassan Zamani speaking on Wednesday, April 18, at the second congress of top female seminary researchers in the field of Quranic sciences.
He referred to the vast scope of orientaists’ research on Islam and Quranic issues, and said Islamic seminaries have held a number of conferences to discuss the works of Western orientalists on these issues.
“We have suggested to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology to establish a Quran and orientalists’ major at the PhD level,” he noted adding that it has received the preliminary go-ahead.
Giving a brief history of Quranic studies by orientalists, Hojat-ol-Islam Zamani said they first translated the Quran. “The first translation of the Quran into a European language was rendered by a French priest in 1142 A.D. This version was kept in the church for 4 centuries because it was believed that only Christian clerics should be allowed to read the Quran so that they can win arguments when having scientific debates with Muslims. ”
He said in the 16th century A.D., the version was finally published and ever since the Holy Quran has been translated into some 50 languages.
The international affairs deputy of the Hozeh further pointed to the orientalists’ works in compiling Islamic and Quranic encyclopedias, saying the first such encyclopedia, which presents an inaccurate image of Islam, was published in 1913 in English, French and German.
