Supervising Strategies for Quran Publication in Iran Explicated
The policies for supervising the publication and distribution of the Holy Quran in the Islamic Republic of Iran were identified in a meeting between the corresponding officials of Quran Publication Center and Iranian Quran News Agency (IQNA).
Present at the meeting which was held on April 22 were Seyyed Ali Sarabi, deputy of Quran Publication Center, and Seyyed Mahdi Seif, member of the center’s Research Council, who elaborated on the regulations of writing, publishing and distributing the Holy Book in the country.
Referring to the reasons for devising such regulations, Sarabi said: “The most important issue is following a common writing style that is confirmed by the center. The copies that are under publication but have not observed the stylistic rules should be edited within a limited period of time.”
“The governmental organizations are also required to observe the regulations, as they often publish a great number of copies and offer them to other countries,” he went on to say, expressing hope that other cultural and non-cultural institutions would follow the rules as well.
“There are over 6000 words with specific writing style in the Quran which comprise less than 10% of all Quran’s words. The existing Iranian copies have followed the style in most cases and the remaining words can be edited in a short time using digital equipments.”
Sarabi further noted that the cost of editing the copies is not high and the center is trying to lower the cost and provide the publishers with a free movie database in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
“Those copies that are dedicated to the artistic and historical aspect of the Quran and published in limited numbers are however excluded from the rules provided that they have no printing errors,” he noted.
Also, Seyyed Mahdi Seif emphasized the use of the center’s strategies in publishing the Holy Book, adding: “The regulations have been made in accordance with an international consensus the violation of which might be interpreted as distorting the Quran; therefore, we are required to be in harmony with the Islamic world by respecting the rules.”
Highlighting the priority of the writing style employed by Quran Publication Center, he noted: “The style is compatible with the level of Persian literacy and general education in the country and is better to be applied prior to other styles; however, other scripts such as Neirizi, Tahir or the Egyptian ones like Osman Taha, and those used in Indian Subcontinent can also be employed.”
“The center stresses the use of a common writing style for words with specific scripts according to the regulations announced by the center,” he went on to say.
