US Student Suspended for Poem about Sandy Hook Carnage
A high school student in California has been suspended for writing a poem in which she ‘understands’ why Adam Lanza murdered 26 people at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
The poem includes lines such as, “I understand the killing in Connecticut; I know why he pulled the trigger; The government is a shame; Society never wants to take the blame; Society puts these thoughts in our head.”
Courtni Webb had written the poem as a way to ventilate her feelings about the horrendous massacre that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Twenty students, aged six and seven, and six adults were killed.
It is reported that the poem was found in Webb’s personal notebook. She is now suspended from Life Learning Academy in San Francisco and is threatened to be permanently expelled.
“Why are we oppressed by a dysfunctional community of haters and blamers? The meaning of the poem is just talking about society and how I understand why things like that incident happened. So it’s not like I’m agreeing with it, but that’s how the school made it seem,” Webb said.
The school saw the poem threatening, but Webb believes the Academy has blown the situation out of proportion since it brings up the societal defects helping to nurture violent tendencies.
Webb also stated that a person should not be judged by his or her creative work, giving Stephen King as an example of an author who writes about dark places but never commits violent acts.
The San Francisco Unified School District is currently deciding on whether the poem was a genuine threat or not. If convicted, Courtni Webb will be expelled.
