A symbolic peaceful procession was led from the centre, in Granby, at 12.30pm.
The group, wearing black and carrying a host of different flags and banners, marched up and down Peverel Drive handing out flyers to the public to commemorate the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain [AS]; the grandson of the Holy Prophet of Islam [PBUH].
President of Zainabiya Islamic Centre, Shabir Sabur, said: “Being born into a holy and exemplified household, people are attracted towards Hussain [AS] for his teachings, generosity and wisdom. He served the people as a leader – promoting and upholding many universal principles.
“Hussain [AS] is revered as the paragon of equality and justice. His revolution against injustice and oppression and life-long service to humanity has inspired devotion to humanitarian service and reform amongst generations of Muslims and non-Muslims globally.
“We commemorate within the centre, but the story of Hussain [AS] is not an Islamic story, it is one of humanity. That is why we have left our own gates and peacefully walked down the street.”
