Shia-Sunni Discord, A Plot Hatched by Enemies: Al-Azhar Sheikh

Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb said fomenting discord and disunity among Shi’ites and Sunnis is a Fitna and a plot hatched by the enemies of the Islamic Ummah.
He made the remark in a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Cairo, adding that enemies should not be allowed to achieve the objectives.
Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb underlined that Muslims should set aside their differences and focus on their commonalities.
He referred to enhancing Muslim unity and promoting proximity of Islamic schools of thought as the main purpose of Al-Azhar University.
He further stressed that the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) have a lofty status among the followers of Sunni school of thought.
Salehi, for his part, congratulated the people of Egypt on the victory of their revolution, expressing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s readiness for providing Egyptian nation with its experiences.
He regarded the issue of provoking differences between Shia and Sunni Muslims as the sedition and conspiracy of the enemies, stressing the need for avoiding differences and relying on commonalities.
The foreign minister further urged for meetings between Iranian and Egyptian scholars and invited the grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar to visit Iran.
The two also discussed the issue of Palestine and the need for supporting the oppressed Palestinian people.
