The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) secretary-general, professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu expressed his wishes that calm and stability prevail in Iraq, urging protestors to express their demand through peaceful democratic means and through democratic channels and constitutionally-accredited institutions.
Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu cautioned against the exploitation of disputes in order to ignite sectarian conflict.
He made the statement on the sidelines of his meeting with Kosovo Foreign Minister Mr. Enver Hoxhaj at the OIC headquarters.
He said that the OIC made goodwill efforts in order to alleviate strife and reached the Mecca agreement in 2006 signed by Iraqi clergy which was the beginning for a political consensus, pointing out that Iraq now undergoes a political dispute which can be solved through amicable democratic means.
The OIC secretary-general expressed his readiness to fully assume his role in this respect and said that he will be too glad to assume this role whenever requested of him.
