He quotes the translation, “God made you shaped you out of a little clay. You were small once. A few years ago you were not at all. You have compassion on one another. He might have made you having no compassion. How had it been then?”Carlyle though being a Christian unhesitatingly accepts that Quran is the “Word of God” and a miracle. Right in the modern days if we are overawed by the ingenuity of America in science and technology, we should also realise that they benefitted from the Holy Quran the most.
The modern sciences affirming that life originated from water quite forget that the it was actually an unlettered man-Prophet(PBUH) 1400 years ago has told of the origin in the verses, “And Allah has created every animal form water. Of them there are some that creep on their bellies. Some walk on two legs and some that walk on four. Allah creates what he wills.”-Holy Quran24:45. Science never solves a problem without creating ten more. Science is an organised body of knowledge. Science is what, when, where, how and why of things around us. It is the series of experimentations and observations. It is a quest of truth, fact and a way of life. Science has always been an important part of our daily lives. Ever since the day mankind began to eat food, wear clothes or light a fire. Science is not only proved in laboratories it is an indispensable part of our survival.
Science is nowadays a universal antidote for the tribulations of the society. My take on the subject is to touch the burning issues of science like global warming, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, environmental pollutions etc. The students can do a lot more if they are provided knowledge about the causes and the prevention of these issues. Ozone layer depletion, caused by CFCs leads to the increased rate of skin cancer among human beings. Global warming is caused by the increased concentration of green house gases like hydrocarbons and Co2 etc. If the students are well informed by their teachers about the prevention of global warming, they can plant more trees to ameliorate the problem. They could make use of refrigerators wisely and judiciously to reduce the conc. of CFCs in the atmosphere. In this superfast life man wants to cover distances instantly. People would prefer travel by plane rather than by train. But at the same time they undermine the very fact that planes are also emitting CFCs thereby also aggravating the problem .Some of the vital animal species are vanishing quite rapidly from this planet like the Kashmiri Hangul and the tiger. Their conservation is imperative for us. General masses can be informed about the medicinal value of different herbs by which they can cure themselves as was the tradition in Kashmir from time immemorial when there used to be herbal healers. If a student is well versed with the use of chemistry, he can purify the impure water by chlorination and therefore can prevent himself from some water borne diseases. In Kashmir, particularly the farmers face a lot of problems due the inadequate production of crops. If they are given the practical knowledge different yield producing crops, they can surely increase the yield and the economy as well. Also they can save their crops by the use of different manures and fertilizers.
We can’t conceive of a society without science. The life would be no better than inferno. Scientists have invented the machines – big and small – through observation of very simple events. Water boiling in a kettle has been instrumental in the idea of Railway engine. Falling of apple from a tree has helped Newton to discover the law of gravity. These days the communication barrier has remained a thing of past. Mobile phone, T.V., internet, e-mail have scaled down this world to a very small area.Mobile phone has now reached to the every nook and corner of the world and the same cannot be done away with at any cost. Students can be made aware that the prolonged use of mobile can cause brain tumour because of its radiations. So what is more important is the prudent use of the device. Our society is called the knowledge society. Internet is the vast source of information concerning any issue. As scholars we can create blogs, share information and have discussions on the social networking sites about the current issues. These sites are also important for a scholarly mind. Modern science has revolutionized our lives in many magnificent ways. The day is not very far when man will be able to travel easily to other stars and planets. Aeroplanes, automobiles, communication satellites and computers are only a few of scientific inventions that have modified our life. Medicine has invented life saving machines that can do the work of such organs as the lungs, kidneys and heart. Medicine has not only cured the incurable diseases but it has also increased the life span of people. Heart surgery and transplantation have now become quite well-known terms. With the discovery of atomic energy man has harnessed never-ending source of energy. It can meet the demands of energy of the world for a long time. Science has done a lot and a lot more needs to be done. Science is an endless series of experimentations which calls forth our patience, dedication and perseverance. It exercises the mind and teaches the logical thinking. It helps to develop divergent thinking. Scientific decisions taken produce better results than believing on superstitions and false notions. This is the age in which nobody can befool anybody. Neither are we living in the world of make-believe nor can we follow the blind faith. We can test and prove ourselves the claims made by the people. At the same time we must take lessons from what happened to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or Bhopal gas tragedy in India for that matter. Science not only creates but it devastates at a larger scale also.
Now the question is what students can do at the individual level to contribute to the scientific arena? As all the students have hidden capacities and at the same time there are individual differences. They can make anything of their choice which could reduce the human effort and time consumption or which could chip in any other way. They can make scientific equipments related to agriculture or tradition or which can serve some domestic purpose.Albert Einstein gave the theory of relativity.
Even if we cannot formulate such radical theories but at least we can make some contribution at the grass root level. The need of the hour is to develop scientific temper among the students. Collective scientific knowledge can used to solve more complex problems. In 2008 National Innovation Foundation, India has established one of the eminent departments called GIAN Cell at Kashmir University. The cell has done a wonderful job in bringing the innovators to the lime light. Students or illiterate citizens can share their innovative ideas with the collaborators of the Dept. Recently in J&k the innovators have made water purifying bottle, electric paint brush, pole climber and paddy cutter. Those who have made these innovations were patented by NIF and awarded by the president of India.
It is an accepted fact that the Western countries are perhaps a century ahead of Eastern people in the arena of technology. The reason is crystal clear that western people studied our scriptures (i.e, the Holy Quran) and explored its various dimensions. They have derived all the scientific principles from the holy Quran. That is the reason that we lag behind so far as the scientific advancement is concerned. To cut the long story short science is the subject which never solves a problem without creating ten more. The more we dig out of it the deeper it goes.
