The opening ceremony was held at Sa’adabad Complex in northern Tehran with the participation of commanders of the Armed Forces and military attachés of Muslim countries.
It began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by internationally-acclaimed Iranian reciter Hamid Reza Ahmadi-Vafa followed by playing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s national anthem.
In an address to the opening ceremony, General Mohammad Ali Asoudi who heads the organizing committee welcomed the guests.
He said 48 invitations were sent to highest-ranking military officials of 48 Muslim countries and that 15 accepted the invitation and sent their representatives.
16 countries said they could not attend the event because of the constitutional restrictions and several others failed o take part because of war and internal conflicts, he noted.
General Mohammad Ali Asoudi noted that 65 Quran reciters and memorizers compete in the international event.
He stated that four Quran experts from Indonesia, Egypt, Malaysia and Iraq as well as 8 Iranian Quran experts will form the jury panel of the contest.
The general went on to say that the competition will conclude with the awarding ceremony slated for Thursday, January 24.
Also speaking at the opening ceremony was Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corpse Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari who said the Islamic societies are more than ever in need of Quranic teachings at a time when there is an organized onslaught against Islam.
The program concluded with Quran recitation by Indonesian Quran Master Ahmed Muhajir.
