Imam Khamenei on Monday agreed to pardon and commute jail terms of 1,298 prisoners on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the 34th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
The Supreme Leader’s decision came in response to a letter from Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani asking for clemency and reduction of the prisoners jail terms.
Tuesday, January 29, 2013, marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
This year, the occasion occurs close to the Ten-Day Dawn celebrations which mark the 34th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution which toppled the US-backed Pahlavi regime, putting an end to 2,500 years of monarchical rule in the country.
