Muslims’ human rights have been breached inside British prisons after the alleged Halal meat that is supplied for inmates was found to be contaminated with pork.
As an obligation, the Ministry of Justice is suspending one of the suppliers of meat to prisons after it found that halal pies and pasties that were allegedly sourced from a properly halal certified supplier, contained traces of non-halal meat.
A spokesman said that the products under suspicion that contain traces of pork have been withdrawn immediately.
"All prisons have been informed about this very regrettable incident and we reported this issue to the Food Standards Agency immediately,” he added.
The campaign group Prison Reform Trust said it welcomes an immediate investigation into the matter.
"This is not a matter of dietary preference but of Islamic law. There are clear hospital and prison rules that halal meat must be on the menu,” its director Juliet Lyon said.
Lyon concluded that the “lapse will have offended and distressed” many Muslim prisoners and their families.
Food and farming Minister David Heath described the incident as a “completely unacceptable situation” as people in Britain have the right to expect that the food they are eating is correctly portrayed.
