His Eminence made the remarks adressing different groups of people from East Azarbaijan province on the anniversary of February 18, 1978, uprising of people of Tabriz at Imam Khomeini (RA) Husseiniya (religious center) in Tehran.
“We believe that nuclear weapons must be obliterated, and we do not intend to make nuclear weapons, but if we had not had this belief and had decided to possess nuclear weapons, no power could have ever been able to stop us,” Imam Khamenei said in an address to thousands of clerics and officials of the city on Saturday.
The Supreme Leader also stated that claiming to be dedicated to spreading democracy in the world is one of the big lies told by US authorities.
“On the one hand they make this claim and on the other, they are constantly confronting and fighting Iran which has one of the most obvious democracies in the region,” Imam Khamenei added.
Imam Khamenei pointed out that while the Americans claim to be promoters of democracy in the region they “are shamelessly supporting countries which have no understanding of democracy and their people have never once cast a vote or seen an election.”
The Supreme Leader cited the US offer for direct talks with Iran to resolve the issues between the two countries as another example of the contradiction between the words and deeds of US officials.
“This claim [that they want to talk to Iran] is made at a time when the Americans are accusing the establishment of the Islamic Republic of wrongful and offensive things, and are resorting to sanctions and pressure to counter the Iranian nation.”
The Supreme Leader further pointed to the Iranian nation’s high turnout in the rallies held across the country to mark the 34th anniversary of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and said, economic problems did not lead to a separation between the people and the Islamic establishment.
The revolutionary people of Tabriz held a mass rally against US-backed Pahlavi regime in 1978 under the leadership of Martyr Ayatollah Ghazi on the occasion of Arba’een (a memorial service that is held 40 days after a person’s death) of martyrs of Qom uprising.
