Speaking in a forum titled “Freedom of Speech in Religious, Ethical and Legal Fields”, they underlined the need for restricting freedom of speech when freedom of religion is at risk.
Head of Austria’s Iranology Institute Professor Florian Shultz said when talking about freedom of speech, questions should be raised about the foundations of freedom.
He said freedom of speech is of high value in society but the dignity of others is the limit to freedom of speech.
Professor Wolfgang Molofank, theology scholar at the University of Vienna regarded freedom of speech as an inter-religious and inter-cultural issue, adding that it helps to create an atmosphere for mutual respect.
He also stressed that there are limitations to freedom of speech in the West, too.
Professor Stephan Hammer was another Austrian scholar addressing the forum. He said freedom of speech can be limited only when freedom of religion is in danger.
The University of Vienna scholar went on to say that freedom of speech should also be limited when it causes social conflicts.
Attended by a number of seminary and university scholars, the “Freedom of Speech in Religious, Ethical and Legal Fields” forum was organized on Monday in the holy city of Qom.
