Indonesia has prepared to organize a conference for Asian Muslim and Christian leaders, which is slated to be held from Feb.26 to March 1. T
he conference is entitled “Bringing a common word to common action for justice.”
It is organized by three religious leaders’ organizations, the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS), the Indonesian Bishops Council (KWI) and the Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) and jointly supported by the Federation of Asian Bishops Conference (FABC) and the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA).
“It is highly expected that through this conference religious leaders from both sides could improve personal relationships in order to be able to address social problems like injustice and other forms of social and economic conflict,” ICIS secretary-general Hasyim Muzadi said in Jakarta on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Hasyim said that the conference would also be the proper medium to explain many cases that showed growing intolerance in many parts of the country. He added, “rest assured that the intolerance school of thought found no clear ground here”.
He said many religious conflicts in Indonesia were actually rooted in social status disparity or political reasons instead of religious ones.
PGI secretary Rev. Gomar Gultom shared the same perspective, saying that religious conflicts in Indonesia had never found an ideological basis. Therefore, he went on, the country still had the chance to develop inter-religious relationships as part of the effort to repel provocative thoughts and narrow-minded religious fanatics.
