The Emirate of Tabuk in northern Saudi Arabia called off an anti-Shia seminar that had been planned to be held in the region.
According to Rasid news agency, Tabligh and Irshad Center affiliated to the country’s Awqaf Ministry had planned the seminar.
Titled “Rafidhis, Beliefs and Objective”, the planned seminar had drawn widespread criticism from cultural activists, authors, and social network users.
Radical Wahabi cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Farres had been scheduled to give a speech at the anti-Shia event.
He vented his anger at Shia Muslims after learning about cancellation of the seminar, writing in his Tweeter page that Shia centers in eastern regions of Saudi Arabia insult the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) companions but the Emirate of Qatif shows no reactions.
The decision to call off the seminar has been welcome by Saudi scholars and social activists.
Shias are a minority in Saudi Arabia comprising some 15 percent, 3.5 million, of the country’s 25 million population.
