Hezbollah’s representative in Tehran Abdullah Safiyeddin said the resistance movement’s modus operandi is following the teachings of the Holy Quran.
Speaking in an interview with IQNA, he added that Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah always refers to Israel as the major enemy of the Islamic Ummah.
Here are excerpts from the interview:
IQNA: What are your views on Nasrallah’s role in proximity of Islamic Schools of thought and enhancing unity in the Muslim Ummah?
Safiyeddin: Certainly, Nasrallah is a unique leader who has managed to influence issues in the Muslim Ummah and the Arab world. He considers Israel to be the root cause of the Islamic Ummah’s problems. He considers resistance against the Zionist enemy as one of the main measures to resolve the problems of the Islamic Ummah and at the same time emphasizes that one of the main problems of Muslims today is discord and disputes among Islamic sects.
Nasrallah believes that if the entire Muslim Ummah focuses on resistance against the Zionist enemy, they will realize a great and significant objective, that is, the destruction of this cancerous tumor (Zionist regime). In Nasrallah’s view, the Muslim Ummah can bring about understanding and cooperation and defeat the enemies through focusing on the commonalities.
The secretary general of Hezbollah stresses that the Muslim Ummah should not get preoccupied with minor and insignificant issues that only intensify differences among Muslims.
IQNA: How effective have been Quranic teachings in shaping Nasrallah’s line of thought?
Safiyeddin: Actually, if we look at the Islamic Resistance of Lebanon, we will witness that the movement’s ideological bases originate from the Holy Quran.
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah begins his speeches with verses from the Quran. If we refer to his speeches, we see that he has used Quranic verses to clarify various issues.
In one of his speeches, Nasrallah referred to verse 173 of Surah Al-e Imran “Those (believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith…,” and said this verse is the motto of the resistance movement at the time (1996 when the world superpowers were holding a meeting in Egypt’s resort city of Sharm-al-Sheikh to confront the resistance movement).
Two years later, a war broke out between the Zionist enemy and the resistance movement and this verse was again our motto. All of these indicate that Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah uses verses of the Holy Quran to determine the resistance movement’s modus operandi.
IQNA: Nasrallah has manifested a successful example of how one can attach importance to both Islamic values and national issues. What is your view of that?
Safiyeddin: First of all, we believe that patriotism is part of our faith. Second, citizens of every country are brothers to one another. In many verses of the Quran and Hadiths by the Infallible (AS), the need for coexistence with the neighbors and respecting them has been emphasized. Then how can it be possible that we as children of one country with a common language and social and cultural commonalities fail to be patriots?
In his enlightening speeches, Nasrallah has underlined that defending one’s country is defending religion, values and ethics. That is why all Lebanese groups support Hezbollah, resistance and a great figure like Nasrallah.
IQNA: In your view, how much Islamic movements in the region, especially those in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, have been affected by the idea of resistance manifested in Nasrallah?
Safiyeddin: The idea of resistance and the statements of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah have been influential in the Arab and Muslim world, helping them to recognize the fact that they can regain their rights. Nasrallah’s speeches have been one of the main factors encouraging regional nations to rise up against oppressive regimes and demand their rights.
