Economic Ethics, How Virtues and Vices Affect Economic Behaviors
In view of Islam, a favorable economic system is a set of acceptable behavioral patterns and in the three areas of production, distribution and consumption.
This is according to academic board member of the Islamic Culture and Thought Research Center Hojat-ol-Islam Seyyed Hossein Mirmoezzi addressing a forum on “Role of Ethics in Economic System Based on Islam’s View”.
He added that Islamic ethics discusses virtues and vices and good and bad characteristics that affect people’s activities and behaviors in the field of economy.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmoezzi noted that in order to clarify the relation between ethics and economic system, first economic system should be defined.
He defined economic system, in Islam’s view, as a set of acceptable behavioral patterns and in the three areas of production, distribution and consumption.
The member of the Higher Council of Islamic-Iranian Pattern of Development said some of the major economic patterns including consumption pattern, investment pattern, saving pattern, labor pattern, trade pattern and transaction pattern link all the system of economy and direct it towards its objectives.
He said the main element of every economic system, Islamic or otherwise, is human behaviors and relations in the areas of production, distribution and consumption.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmoezzi quoted Martyr Motahhari as saying that Islamic teachings are divided into three parts, the first part being about beliefs or principles, which are discussed in theology.
The second part is ethics that discusses mental and spiritual virtues such as Hikma (wisdom), bravery, chastity, etc, Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmo’ezzi noted.
He referred to Ahkam (Islamic injunctions) as the third part of Islamic teachings that features performing Hajj, prayers, fasting, etc.
He added that in all these areas there are virtues and vices that shape one’s behavior and conduct.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmoezzi went on to say that in discussing economic ethics, one should pay attention to the virtues and vices, good and bad characteristics that affect people’s behaviors in the areas of production, distribution and consumption.
