Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei said remaining with people, sportsmanship and avoiding conceit are some of the moral characteristics needed for sportsmen.
His Eminence made the statement on Monday in a meeting with a number of veteran athletes, coaches, and medal winners in international sports competitions, describing the country’s sports champions as the ambassadors of the Iranian nation’s identity, excellence, determination, high intelligence, and steadfast faith.
Imam Khamenei stressed that achievements in sports cannot be made without endeavors, determination and intelligence, adding that champions manifest a nation’s capabilities and, therefore, elevate people’s self-confidence and national trust.
The Supreme Leader described the participation of sportsmen in international sports arenas while maintaining moral values, the spirit of sportsmanship and observing Islamic tenets, as promoting the outstanding values and characteristics of a nation at the international level.
His Eminence praised the Iranian women athletes who attend international sports events while observing Hijab, describing it as exceptional, very significant and valuable.
Imam Khamenei referred to the threats and attacks against Muslim women in Europe, adding that in such conditions, when an Iranian Muslim woman wearing Hijab wins championship and makes everyone bow to her, a great achievement has been made.
The Supreme Leader underlined that the Islamic Revolution’s victory paved the way for the talents of the youth to burgeon in different areas, adding that the accomplishments and progresses of the country’s youth demonstrate the high talents of Iranian youth in different fields and that there should be investment to nurture these talents.
His Eminence highlighted the importance of ethics in sports, saying that the Iranian sports community is a healthy one but warning that when a young athlete becomes the center of attention in the world, morally wrong dangers threaten him and he should remain alert in the face of these threats.
Imam Khamenei further called on the country’s sports officials to prioritize sports fields and invest more on fields with historical roots and enough experience in the country.
Prior to the Supreme Leader’s speech, a number of athletes and veteran sportsmen including Hamid Sourian, Hassan Gerami, and Mahlegha Janbozorgi gave speeches, expressing their views about the sports issues in the country.
Also, Abbasi, the Minister of Sports and Youth, gave a report about the accomplishments and successes of the country’s sports community in international, Olympics, Paralympics and Asian sports events.
