Jacques Baroque’s Biased Translation of Quran Aimed at Preventing Growth of Islam
The main reason why contemporary Algerian orientalist Jacques Baroque embarked on translation of the Quran in a biased way was to prevent the spread of Islam.
This is according to Zeynab Mustafa Abdul-Aziz, an Egyptian university scholar who has reviewed the Quran translation by Baroque in a book titled “Quran Translations, Where to?”.
She says Baroque feared that people and thinkers were renouncing other religions to embrace Islam. “Through this translation, he sought to hinder the growing trend of people’s tendency toward Islam.”
Ms Abdul-Aziz in her book criticizes the translation as inaccurate and very biased.
She also makes a critique of 4 lectures delivered by Jacques Baroque at the Arab World Center in Paris.
Ms Abdul-Aziz also points to the support for the erroneous translation by the biased media.
She says in order to prove how biased and inaccurate the translation is one only needs to read it analytically.
Born in Algeria in 1904, Jacques Baroque published his translation of the Quran in 1990. He held the chair of Islamic studies in College de France. He died in 1995.
