The Salafists in Egypt, especially the Hezb-ol-Nour party, seek to step up their Shiaphobia and Iranophobia agenda, Ahram website reported.
In line with this objective, they held an anti-Shia conference on Thursday, April 4, titled “Confronting the Development of Shia Doctrine in Egypt”.
It was held by Salafist groups with the aim of distorting the image of Shia Islam and its followers.
Salafist figures of Egypt like Yasser Barhami, Ahmed Farid, Abdol-Mun’em Al-Shahat, Sharif Al-Hiwari, and Seyyed Al-Afani took part in the conference in which the speakers described Shia Islam as a threat to the present and future of Egypt.
They also described the differences between Shi’ites and Sunnis as deep-rooted and serious.
“We believe Shi’ites have distorted the teachings of Islam and the Quran,” Sharif Al-Hiwari, who heads the Al-Da’wa Salafist group, claimed while addressing the event.
He added that the conference was an attempt to “reveal the truth about Shi’ism and its dangers including Shi’ites’ efforts to infiltrate Egypt and their cooperation with the United States in the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq” (!).
The speakers called on Salafists and Wahabis to hold a rally in front of the Iranian embassy in Cairo and voice their opposition to the development of ties between Iran and Egypt.
