Speaking during a visit to the holy city on Monday, Martin Kobler said the United Nations backs the move to register the holy shrine on the world Heritage List, Buratha news agency reported.
He described the mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS) as an “island of peace and sanctity”, adding “whenever I come to Najaf, I insist on visiting the holy shrine because of its sanctity.”
Kobler addedt hat he supports measures for speeding up the registration of the holy shrine.
During his visit to Najaf, the UN Secretary General’s special representative also met with Iraq’s source of emulation Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani.
