Egypt’s Coptic Archbishop said verses of the Holy Quran underline coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
Speaking in a TV program, Archbishop Paulos Aiwaza referred to verse 13 of Surah Al-Hujurat “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another,” saying that the verse calls for coexistence.
He said he learned the Quran at Maktabkhana (traditional school) when he was a child.
The archbishop noted that Copts and Muslims have friendly relations in Egypt and that the country’s Christians attend Iftar (fast-breaking) feasts in the holy month of Ramadan.
He also referred to his close friendship with Al-Azhar scholar Sheikh Alawi Amin, and said Shekih Alavi helped him learn about Islam.
The largest Christian group in Egypt, Copts make up some 10 percent of the country’s population.
