The mosque has been under construction in Algeria’s capital since last year, algerie-focus website reports.
Upon completion, it will be the third largest mosque in the world after Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid Al-Nabi in Medina.
The library of the grand mosque Algiers will be a 15-storey building with a capacity to hold over a million titles, Algeria’s Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs Bu Abdullah Ghulamullah said.
He said the mosque will also have a Quran instruction center with the capacity of admitting 300 Quran learners.
The project also includes a Dar-ol-Quran center, a cultural-Islamic center, a permanent exhibitions site, an Islamic arts museum and a research center.
Construction of the mosque had been planned to start in 2009 but was later postponed for unspecified reasons.
It is being built in a 400,000 square meter plot of land and will have a minaret 265 meters high. It will hold 120,000 worshippers.
