Looking at economics from an Islamic point of view shows that praying, Tawakul (putting one’s trust in God) and Shokr (thanking God) are requirements for success in economic activities.
This is according to academic board member of Islamic Culture and Thought Research Center Hojat-ol-Islam Seyyed Hossein Mirmo’ezzi, speaking at the 15th session of the forum on theorization in Islamic economics.
He referred to the topics mentioned in previous sessions, saying that economic ethics is a system of behaviors and relations in the fields of production, distribution and consumption.
The cleric noted that there are two hands at work in economy, one visible and the other invisible. “The visible hand is that of the government and the invisible hand is the ethics governing the society that shapes the motivations and behaviors.
He said the ethics governing capitalism is based on hedonism, which is quite different from the ethics governing Islamic economy.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmo’ezzi then explained about Islam’s economic ethics saying that ethics can be discussed in four kinds of relationships, namely relationship between man and God, man and nature, man and other human beings, and man and himself.
Member of the Supreme Council of Islamic-Iranian Model of Development said Tawakul, Shokr and Riza (being happy with what God has determined for us) are some of the ethical issues discussed previously.
“Here, we will discuss the issue of prayer as an issue in man’s relationship with God. Man should always be in praying and pray about his needs.”
He underlined that the prerequisite for praying is the recognition of the need to the one who has absolute power.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmo’ezzi quoted the Infallible Imams (AS) as saying that praying is the healing for all problems and that it repels calamities.
He went on to say that in doing everything one should have the intention to do good and be hopeful about God’s help, so that he can receive Divine assistance and success.
