A senior Iranian official says Western powers have been attempting to hijack the Islamic Awakening movement by downplaying the Islamic aspects of it.
“Western powers tried to downplay the Islamic aspects of this popular movement by using concepts such as ‘Arab Spring,’” Secretary-General of the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening Ali Akbar Velayati said on Monday.
The Iranian official added that the West seeks to portray the popular movement of the Islamic Awakening as part of the globalization of the values of Western liberal democracy.
“This is while many of the regional people practically considered freedom and democracy as the means to provide suitable grounds for reviving religious values,” the Iranian official added.
“Holding Friday prayers and using religious slogans and symbols during demonstrations showed that Muslim revolutionaries sought freedom and Islam as their inseparable demands,” Velayati said.
Velayati, who also serves as the senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei, made the remarks in the opening ceremony of the international conference of Scholars and Islamic Awakening.
The two-day conference opened in Iran’s capital, Tehran, on Monday with a speech by Imam Khamenei. Velayati had said earlier that the event is the most important conference held so far on the Islamic Awakening.
Nearly 700 clerics and scholars from Muslim and non-Muslim countries and various religions are participating in the international conference.
‘Islamic Awakening, challenges and opportunities’ as well as ‘Palestine and resistance’ against the Israeli regime are among the topics that will be highlighted during the conference. The crisis in Syria will also be at the heart of the talks.
Over the past few years, Iran has hosted several international conferences related to Islamic Awakening such as the Islamic Awakening and the Youth, Women and the Islamic Awakening and Muslim University Professors and Islamic Awakening.
