This is according to Sheikh Majdi Saeed Tantawi, member of Egypt’s Union of Quran Reciters, who added in an interview with IQNA that the jury members should be tolerant, broadminded and good-tempered.
He said such features are required for judges to be able to assess the participants’ performance in international Quran competitions.
These are apart from other necessities such as mastery over Tajweed and other rules of Quran recitation, he added.
The Al-Azhar University instructor noted that tolerance and patience are very important for the judges in order to prevent them from making hasty and unfair assessments.
He said jury panels of Quran competitions should have at least five members to ensure fairness in judgments.
Asked whether there is a need for compiling general regulations for judgment in all international Quran competitions, Sheikh Tantawi hailed it and said the jury panel should judge the contestants based on clear and established regulations.
“The kind of questions posed to the contestants should also be decided by the regulations determined prior to the contest.”
He further underlined the need for contestants in an international Quran competition to meet certain criteria such as memorization of the Quran and mastery over the rules of Tajweed.
The Egyptian Quran reciter added that organizers of Quran competition ought to inform the potential participants well before the contest is due to be held so that they may have enough time for preparing for the competition.
He pointed to the role of Quran competitions in fostering the Quranic culture and ethics and said they will also help to encourage people to walk on the path of the Holy Quran.
The Egyptian Quran reciter, who has served as a jury member in several international Quranic contests including the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, said referred to the Dubai event as one of the well-organized international Quran contests.
Sheikh Majdi Saeed Tantawi travelled to the Islamic Republic of Iran last year during the holy month of Ramadan and recited the Quran in several Quran recitation sessions in the country.
