Syrian Quran expert Sheikh Muhammad Uns Dawamina made the remark in an interview with IQNA, adding that jury members have long experience of attending Quran competitions and therefore their suggestions and ideas would be very worthwhile.
He said organizers of the competition should pay close attention to these ideas and suggestions in order to improve the contests.
The Syrian Quranic figure, who is a memorizer of the entire Quran, added that after every Quran competition is over, the organizers should look back at it and identify the possible shortcomings and weaknesses to avoid them in the future editions.
“Jury members can contribute significantly to the identification and removal of the weaknesses and shortcomings.”
Sheikh Dawamina further referred to impartiality as a main factor in judgments and said all countries that organize Quran competitions should be committed to ensuring impartiality in judging the contestants.
“In international Quran competitions, jury members should not be biased toward the host country,” he underlined.
“It is not appropriate to see that the winners of the competition are always from the host country. In that case, the competition cannot be regarded as an international event.”
The Syrian Quran expert stresses that Quran contests should only aim to serve the Holy Quran by bringing together Quran activists from different countries.
He also said the judgment regulations of international Quran competitions should be carefully determined and reviewed to make sure fairness in judgments.
“As for choosing the jurors, it should also be done with utmost care and based on specialized and scientific criteria.”
Asked about the role of international Quran contests in promoting the Quranic culture and fostering the teachings of the Holy Book, Sheikh Dawamina said Quran competitions are venues for Quran activists to get together.
“As faith-based events, they create a Quranic atmosphere which encourages everyone to memorize and read the Holy Book.”
He went on to say that Quran competitions promote the culture of benevolence, worshiping God, and serving the Holy Quran.
Sheikh Dawamina, who is a memorizer of the entire Quran and a Quran teacher in Syria, serves as dean of Theology and Law Faculty at Sheikh Ahmed Kaftar Research Center. He has served as a jury member in several international Quran contests.
