The first characteristic of the people of Nifaq (hypocrites) is speaking more and acting less while Islam is 90 percent about action and 10 percent about words.
This is according to seminary and university scholar Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Taqi Fa’alli, speaking at the 12th session of a series of forums on faith-based lifestyle.
He elaborated on the interpretation of the first verses of Surah Al-Baqara and said the hypocrites have made a veil for not seeing and hearing the truth. The scholar underlined that this world is abundant in things that should be heard and seen.
He pointed to verse 44 of Surah Al-Isra “… And there is not a thing except that it exalts [ Allah ] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing and Forgiving,” saying that one who is Sami’e (hearing) can hear the world exalting God.
He also cited verse 75 of Surah Al-An’am, “And thus did We show Abraham the realm of the heavens and the earth that he would be among the certain [in faith]” and said these are among things that worthy of seeing in the world.
Hojat-ol-Islam Fa’alli then continued discussing the characteristic of the hypocrites and said their main characteristic is dishonesty, namely, they pretend to be something they are not or believe in something they actually do not.
Referring to verse 8 of Surah Al-Baqara “And of the people are some who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are not believers,” he said such people speak a lot but act little. “This is while if we consider Islam carefully, we realize that it is 90percent about action and only 10 percent about words.”
He also underlined that according to this verse of the Holy Quran, faith is not about words but it is something in heart. “Of course faith has two dimensions, the interior and the exterior and the first one is genuine.”
He also noted that God, who has created everything, including mankind, is aware of the hidden-most parts of our hearts and our beliefs and actions.
The scholar then read verse 9 of Surah Al-Baqara “They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not,” stressing that the hypocrites deceive others by cancelling the truth.
He went on to say that whoever deceives people is actually trying to deceive God, but God will return it to themselves.
The series of forums on faith-based lifestyle is organized weekly by the International Quran News Agency.
