Al-Hilbawi passed away on Saturday, June 15, in Egypt after suffering from diabetes for months He was 67.
The Egyptian Quran master had formed an Ibtihal group that performed Ibtihal and Tawasheeh programs in international events in Italy, France, Germany, and elsewhere.
Born in 1946 in Cairo, he started learning the Quran by heart at an early age and managed to memorize the entire Quran under the supervision of his grandfather.
He also learned Quran recitation benefiting from the expertise of several Quran masters. Al-Hilbawi would recite the Quran in mosques and religious gatherings when he was just 15.
In 1979, he entered Cairo’s Quran Radio as a reciter and Mubtahil and ever since travelled to many countries to share his experiences with Quran reciters in the Muslim world.
His international activities included serving as a jury member in international Quran competitions and holding lectures about Quran recitation and Ibtihal in Iran, Kuwait and elsewhere.
Al-Hilbawi also served as a jury member of the 4th International Holy Quran Competition for Muslim Students.
In an interview with IQNA on the sidelines of that competition, he referred to Quran contests as an indirect response to desecration of Islamic sanctities.
“The international competition that was held in Tabriz with the participation of representatives from 52 countries demonstrated the love and devotion of Muslims toward the Quran and Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) and therefore it was an indirect but clear response from Muslims to those who defile Islamic sanctities.”
He said Muslim students who took part in the contest resolutely declared that they are committed to the teachings and principles of Islam and that acts of sacrilege will not weaken their faith because God says in verse 19 of Surah Aal-Imran: “Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam.”
The Egyptian Quran reciter further said the 4th International Holy Quran Competition for Muslim Students was held at a high level, urging other Muslim countries to organize their Quran competitions at the same level.
Al-Hilbawi stressed that the gathering of Quran reciters and memorizers from different countries in the international competition in Tabriz will positive results in the long run.
He suggested that categories related to the meaning of Quranic words as well as Quran interpretation be added to the competition so that the contenders will pay more attention to the meaning of the Quran’s verses.
Al-Hilbawi further thanked the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei for his attention to training Quran memorizers and reciters. He also thanked the organizers of the 4th international Hoy Quran Competition for Muslim Students.
