The government of Algeria plans to establish a special organization to oversee issuing Fatwas by the country’s religious scholars.
Algeria’s Religious Affairs Minister Abdullah Ghulamallah made the announcement on Thursday, June 20, adding that the new organization will be made up of top religious scholars, icilome website reported.
He said Fatwas will be approved based on the regulations of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the guidelines set by Al-Azhar Islamic Center.
Ghulamallah said that a few days ago a plan by the government about financial institutions was discussed by eminent scholars and after it was deemed compatible with Islamic laws, the plan was approved.
“We intend to raise such issues in the planned organization so that scholars and experts can discuss their religious and national aspects.”
He stressed that Islam is a religion of peace and those who distort the image of Islam by issuing radical Fatwas have been strayed from the straight path.
“The government of Algeria will strongly confront issuing such Fatwas,” the religious affairs minister went on to say.
