A total of 1249 inmates were given amnesty or had their jail terms reduced on the auspicious occasion.
They had been convicted in general and revolutionary courts, State Discretionary Punishments Organization, and the Armed Forces’ Judicial Organization.
Ayatollah Amoli-Larijani in a letter requested pardon for the inmates after they were found eligible for clemency by the Judiciary’s Central Clemency Commission.
Clause 11 of Article 110 of the Islamic Republic Constitution allows the Supreme Leader to pardon or commute prison terms.
The law, however, does not apply to all convicts, especially those found guilty of armed struggle against the state, armed robbery, drug trafficking, rape, arms smuggling, kidnapping, bribery and embezzlement.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, pardons and amnesties have been granted to prisoners on occasions coinciding with religious and national celebrations.
