The rallies were staged in different cities on the first anniversary of Mohamed Morsi’s election as the first post-revolution president, Al-Yawm Al-Sabi daily reported.
More than 600 people were wounded and ten others killed in clashes between Morsi’s opponents and supporters in cities like Cairo, Alexandria, Asyut, and Bani Suwayf .
Opposition groups, who have been calling on Morsi to step down, tried to show their force in Sunday’s demonstrations.
They gathered in front of the Al-Itihadiya presidential palace and some tried to break in over the walls but failed. Morsi who had left the Al-Itihadiya Palace because of security concerns monitored the events from Al-Quba Palace.
His opponents also attacked the offices of Muslim Brotherhood in various cities and set the offices on fire.
Egypt’s National Salvation Front has called for another millions-strong rally called “Insistence” on Tuesday, July 2, in front of Al-Itihadiya and Al-Quba palaces.
Meanwhile, Yusuf Al-Qaradawi in an interview with Aljazeera defended Morsi and said if he steps down someone worse will come to power.
