The Muslim world should work together to counter the use of new Top-Level Domains (TLDs) under the names of Islam and halal, said Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
He said this measure should be taken to avoid any complication that might cause disputes or result in the misuse of domains such as .islam and .halal.
Ihsanoglu said currently, there was a lack of support to counter the use of new TLDs by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), which was responsible for Internet domains such as .com and .org, and which had expanded to carry domains such as .islam and .halal.
According to a statement issued by the OIC, Ihsanoglu said this in his opening speech at the 36th session meeting of the Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah from June 30 to July 2.
The OIC secretary-general urged the 57-member OIC to examine all aspects of the issue and adopt a resolution accordingly.
During the meeting, Ihsanoglu also launched the new OIC website, which is more dynamic, interactive and user-friendly as compared to the older website.
"In our continued efforts to present the OIC and promote it in the best possible way, during the past few years, we have given special attention to developing the OIC website, considering it the 'window' to the OIC," he said.
He also pointed out that the Internet had now become the most important source of information, particularly among youths, who make up a large percentage of the Muslim population and who used social media channels to bring change to the region.
This indicated that it was essential to be connected to the world in cyberspace, he noted.
