The lack of an interpretation source that is agreed upon by all schools of thought impedes inclusion of Quran interpretation category in international competitions.
This is according to Muhammad Javad Al-Tarihi, representative of the Netherlands in Iran’s International Quran Competition.
In an interview with IQNA, he said the Islamic Republic of Iran has filled the gap by including the Quranic research category.
He noted that most Quran competitions held at the international level have only two categories of recitation and memorization.
Al-Tarihi said what makes it difficult for organizers of Quran contests to include the category of Tafsir (Quran interpretation) is that there is no common source of interpretation that all Muslim schools of thought agree upon.
The Dutch Quran reciter said the inclusion of Quranic research category in Iran’s competition has somehow filed the gap as contenders in this category consider different Quranic and Islamic issues.
He further urged that the categories of Adhan and Ibtihal be included in international Quran competitions, including the one held in Iran.
Asked about the effects of international Quran contests in promoting the Quran culture, he said these events certainly play an important role in fostering the culture of the Quran in society.
Al-Tarihi underlined that Muslims, especially those living in non-Muslim countries, need Quran competitions because such events promote Quran recitation and memorization.
He compared the international Quran contests in Iran and Malaysia, saying that while Iran’s contest is not as old as Malaysia’s, it has reached as high a level.
The Dutch Quran activist praised Iranian competition’s judgment regulations and said what distinguishes it from regulations in other international Quran contests is paying attention to subtle issues like Sowt and Lahn.
He urged that regulations of international Quran contests be integrated so that all contestants know what criteria there will be for judgments.
