The second official mosque in Italy was launched on Saturday, July 6, Islammesage website reported. It is in Turin, a city in northwest of Italy that used to be the country’s capital from 1861 to 1865.
Permission for building the mosque was obtained by Italy’s Muslims in 2010. Its construction had been planned to conclude in 2012 but it was postponed due to financial problems.
After Rome’s mosque, the mosque in Turin is the second Muslim place of worship officially recognized by Italy’s government and that is why it is so important for the country’s Muslims.
Part of the expenses for building the mosques has been paid by Morocco and the rest has been provided by benevolent Muslims.
According to president of Italy’s Muslims Union Abdu-Aziz Khunati, the mosque will play an important role in strengthening unity among the city’s Muslims.
According to latest Italian official statistics, Muslims make up about 34 percent of the 2,400,000 foreign residents living in Italy.
