France’s Union of Islamic Organizations announced Thursday, August 8, as Eid Al-Fitr.
Issuing a statement, the union said the country’s Muslim groups made extensive efforts to determine the beginning and end of the holy month of Ramadan.
It said representatives of 6 big Islamic organizations in France held a scientific meeting in May which decided to form a Fiqhi council to determine the first and last day of Ramadan.
The statement added that according to the calculations by the members of the council, the first day of Ramadan was announced to be July 9 and its last day will be August 8.
The French Muslims Council, which is the only official Islamic institution recognized by the French government, had determined July 10 as the first day of Ramadan but withdrew its view following objections from Islamic groups and the Union of Islamic Organizations.
France is home to the largest Muslim minority in Western Europe. Some 6 million Muslims are estimated to be living in the country.
