According to Al-Yawm Al-Sabi daily, security forces stormed the sit-ins in Rabaa al-Adawiya and Nahda Squares.
Al-Alam news network said 17 individuals have been killed in the crackdown on the supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi in Cairo.
It said the number of those killed in the operation is likely to rise, adding that a large number of protesters have been injured.
As the operation started, military helicopters hovered over the two squares. Security forces used tear gas to disperse the protesters and clashed with the demonstrators.
Egypt’s state-run TV said an army officer, a soldier and six police members have been killed in Wednesday clashes in Cairo.
Meanwhile, Muslim Brotherhood leaders have called on Morsi supporters to remain in the two squares and reiterate their demands, Al-Mayadin network reported.
Mohammed Morsi is reported to have threatened to go on a hunger strike if protesters in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square are attacked.
Egypt’s interim government had repeatedly called on the sit-in protesters to end their sit-in and leave the two squares.
The sit-in began two months ago when the army overthrew Mohamed Morsi. Protesters demand that Morsi is returned to power.
