A huge car bomb went off in the suburbs of Beirut on Thursday, August 15, killing more than 20 people and wounding scores of others.
The blast happened near the Shuhada (martyrs) Hussianiya (religious center), which is a crowded area.
Tens of cars were destroyed as a result of the explosion and fire raged in some of the nearby buildings. Many people were trapped in their homes as several buildings were seriously damaged in the bombing.
The bombing occurred only one day after Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah claimed responsibility for a defensive action in which several Zionist soldiers were wounded upon entering Lebanese territory.
Some Lebanese sources say the bombing may have been a reaction by the Zionist regime to Hezbollah’s defensive action.
Neither Hezbollah nor Lebanese authorities have taken any official stand about the terrorist bombing yet.
The Zionist regime’s Channel One television said the aim of the blast in Lebanon seems to have been dealing a blow to Hezbollah.
An unknown group calling itself the Brigades of Aisha has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to a Lebanese source the bombing could be a Zionist plot aimed at fanning the flames of Fitna and discord between Shias and Sunnis.
Meanwhile Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati declared Friday as a national day of mourning in Lebanon.
He condemned the terrorist attack in Beirut suburbs and underlined the need for national dialogue and formation of a new government.
