The religion of Islam is one that promotes monogamy though some Muslims feel they must have multiple wives, said Chairman of the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, Nafeesa Mohammed.
“But you know there is a notion, or a perception, when you talk about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and you talk about how many wives he has. Nowadays the trend seems to be where some people interpret a...verse in the Holy Quran where based on people’s interpretation some people feel that they must have more than one wife. But I think by and large, people generally recognise that Islam is a religion that promotes monogamy,” she said.
Mohammed, also legal advisor for the San Juan Ladies Muslim Association, noted that the Prophet Muhammad was married to a wealthy businesswoman in Mecca for 25 years, and only after her death, and “because of some very exceptional situations, because of wars and what have you, our Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would have been married (again)”. She made the remarks during her feature address at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service annual Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations held Wednesday at the Police Administration Building, Port-of- Spain. She told the audience that she was “no Muslim scholar” but was giving her own views.
A Muslim leader, who asked not to be named, said that even though having multiple wives is permissible, it is under certain instructions, and if one cannot follow it, then they should not do it. He said a lot of Muslims with multiple wives do not read the Quran properly on the issue, and leave out the part where they have to treat them equally, which was practically impossible.
“I have not seen any human being have three or four women and have the same love for them,” he commented. He said that some local Muslims were “making it a mockery” and not following the law regarding multiple wives, as it was written in the Quran. He noted he was aware of marriages that had problems when the husband decided to take another wife, and he did not recommend it.
On the Prophet Muhammad, he said God had to give permission for him to do that, and the purpose was to unite the various tribes.
